The phrase “hidari uchiwa” (the fan in the left hand) originated from the assumption that the majority of people in Japan are right-handed. It was derived from the image of a person who could hold a fan with their clumsy left hand and still comfortably fan themself, and it came to signify a life of ease and comfort. There is a senryu poem that says, “I show my filial love by not letting my right hand hold even a fan.”
