‘home’は副詞？

Question

on the way home は「帰宅途中」という意味だと勉強したのですが、このhomeはwayを修飾してるのですか？

直訳すると「家への道の上」になるべきだから、homeは形容詞的に使うべきでは無いのですか？

「way home」は慣用句として覚えてください。

それでも品詞が気になるようでしたら、この「home」は名詞です。

「on the way」または「on one’s way」に続く言葉は、向かう方向を表す言葉です。それが自宅である場合、前置詞 (to) も冠詞 (the) も使わずに「home」とします。

I saw a white dog on my way to the post office.
「to the」が必要。

I saw a white dog on my way to school.
「the」は使わない。

I saw a white dog on my way to work.
「the」は使わない。

I saw a white dog on my way home.
「to」も「the」も使わない。

この「home」は副詞ではありません。副詞は動詞や形容詞を修飾するもので、名詞 (way) を修飾することはないです。以下に「home」を副詞とする例を挙げます。

I went home after 9 pm.

He will be happy to drive home. He’s got a nice, new car.

I decided to stay home because it was raining.
