以下、~make it clear they would continue to take~ の一文で、「they~」以下はclearを修飾していると思っているのですが、文法的にどうように説明できますでしょうか。
また、追加的で申し訳ありませんが、この場合の「make it clear」は、第5文型のmake O Cなのか使役動詞なのかどちらでしょうか。意味的にはどちらでも通るような気がします。

Many of the protesters made it clear (that) they would... では、実際に clear にすることは that 以下の節なのですが、それを Make (something) clear の形で入れるには長すぎるので、とりあえず make の形式目的語として it を置いて、真の意味の部分を that 以下の節で述べる、ということをしています。
ということで、that 以下の節は何かを修飾しているのではなくて、形式目的語 it の真の意味に当たるということになります。
この make は使役動詞ではなく、ただ単に第五文型の S V O C を作っているだけです。
