英語を話す人に対して、「この文の意味は何ですか」と尋ねると「書いている通りです」ということになってしまうかもしれません。そのため、「説明してもらえますか」とか、「言葉を変えるとどうなりますか」のような尋ね方が良いでしょう。

文の構造を尋ねる際、相手が英語の先生なら説明してくれるでしょう。しかし一般的なネイティブスピーカーに質問するなら、文法の知識がない人が大勢いますので、期待したような答えが返ってこないかもしれません。
