代名詞について

おっしゃる通り things と we の間に目的格の関係代名詞 that または which が省略されています。

これを関係代名詞を使わずに分解すると。

We can investigate them.

この2つの文章では、the most difficult things = them という繰り返しがあるので、後に出てくるほうを関係代名詞にして（them = that/which）、それを節の前にもってきて2つの文をくっつける、ということができます。

このときに、them は目的格の関係代名詞（この場合は that/which）に変わって前にもってきているので、ここに them はすでにないことになります。なので、ここに them を入れると、that/which とダブっておかしなことになります。
