the day after と聞くと、after WHAT? とツッコミを入れたくなるところです。
つまり、何の after なのかが必要になるので、the day after だけでは tomorrow を含む文の話法の転換では使えないと思います。ただし、the day after (what) が自明な場合は、the day after だけで通じるかもしれません（があまりきっちりした言い方ではないと思います）。
Today is Labour Day so we are closed, but I can finish this job by the end of tomorrow.
= He said he could finish this job by the the end of the day after Labour Day.
