確かに、「昨日電車に間に合った？」と聞きたい時に、ぱっと思い浮かぶ表現は、
Were you able to catch the train yesterday?
です。
これを、
Could you catch the train yesterday?
と聞けないこともないのですが、Could you? には「〜していただけますか？」という丁寧表現として多用されているので、それと区別しているのだと思います。
事実を述べる肯定文として、「昨日電車に間に合った」と言うのに
I could catch the train yesterday. と絶対に言わないとはいえないですが、
この could にもむしろ仮定法過去「〜できるかも、やろうと思えばできる」みたいな意味で多用されるので、それと区別して、
I was able to catch the train. とか、
可能性には触れずに事実として
I caught the train yesterday. とか言うかなと思います。

そもそも「電車に間に合う」というのであれば、can/could catch the train とか言うよりは、
I made it to the train yesterday.
とか言うと思います。
聞く時にも、
Did you make it to the train yesterday?
と聞きます。
この「〜に間に合う」という make it to 〜はよく使われます。
