As he put it: 'the idea of David Copper field... was to take all the world into his confidence'.
の意味を教えてください。
後にも the reading world has continued 'into his confidence' と出てきます。
このうち the reading world は「読者」を指していると考えてよいですか。

少し古臭い表現だと思いますが、
take someone into one's confidence
というと、誰かを完全に信頼して心を許す/全てを打ち明ける、というような意味です。
take all the world into his confidence
といえば、（彼が）全世界を完全に信頼して心を許す/全てを打ち明ける、というような意味になると思います。
"reading world" という表現も珍しいと思いますが、恐らく前述の all the world が読者であるという前提から、世界中の読者、などという意味で使われているのだと思います。つまり、... the reading world has continued "into his confidence" とは、世界中の読者は「心を許され/全てを打ち明けられ」続けた、というような意味になるかと思います。
