with regard to them の意味は？

以下の文章の"external events... I do control"の部分について質問です。

The road to virtue, in turn, lay in understanding that destructive emotions, like anger and jealousy, are under our conscious control- they don't have to control us, because we can learn to control them. In the words of Epictetus:
"external events I cannot control, but the choices I make with regard to them, I do control".

全体の意味としては、我々の外側で起きることについては制御できないが、我々がどう選択するかはコントロールできるという意味だということは分かるのですが、with regard to themの部分の意味が分かりません。
