A subtype of hybrid vehicles is the so-called plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). PHEV is a general fuel-electric parallel or serial hybrid vehicle, with increased energy storage capacity, that usually employs a lithium-ion battery. PHEV can be driven in the full-electrical mode over a certain distance that depends mainly on the battery size. PHEV may be connected to an electricity supply terminal at the end of the journey in order to avoid charging by using the on-board internal combustion engine.
