所有格、冠詞theの使い分けについて

He studied hard but the test results were not as good as he expected.
(一生懸命勉強したにもかかわらず、彼の試験結果は期待したほどのものではなかった。)

この例文のthe test results の部分でhis test results ではなく、theが使われているのはなぜなのでしょうか？

his test results でも良いですよ。小さな違いしかありません。また、ご質問とは関係ありませんが、最後は … not as good as he had expected と、過去完了を使う方が良いです。
