as far asの使い方、その③

as … as の比較級はよくご存知だろうと察します。

Tom is happy. Sarah is happy.

Sarah is as happy as Tom is happy.

上の文は、文法的には正しいです。しかし、Tom is に続く happy は自明です。そのため普通は、次のように言います。

Sarah is as happy as Tom is.

これと同様に、ご質問の文も、D-Day was の後に再び far と言うことは、普通ないのです。

たぶん、日本語でも同じように思います。

三日前、あなたの「その②」に回答した時は、映像見なかった。その後、あなたの「その③」を読んで、6月6日のPBS NewsHourを探し出して確かめたら、下記はやはり間違いないです。CCは違っていますけど。

＞＞Today, we are as far from D-Day as D-Day was from the height of the American Civil War.

＞＞上記の通りの発声でwasとfromの間にはas farは入っていませんでした。

その通り、入ってません。入っている筈がない。AとBだけ比べているので、as far asは一回だけです。

as （形容詞）as の例文：

He is as tall as his father.　（彼は父親と同じくらい背が高い。）彼と父親を比べている
She is as fast as a cheetah.　（彼女はチーターのように速い。）彼女とチーターを比べてる
Their house is as big as a supermarket.　（彼らの家はスーパーマーケットと同じくらい大きい。）家とスーパーを比べている。

元の文章に戻ると、比べているのは我々（現在）とD-Dayの時間的距離（80年）とD-DayとAmerican Civil Warの時間的距離（約80年）。こういう風にAとBを比べる時、「as far as」は一回のみ。

同じ構造の例文：

My house is as far from the station as the station is from the post office.
　　　　 (A) The distance between my house and the station
　　　　 is roughly the same as
　　　　 (B) the distance between the station and the post office

例えば、AとBはどっちも約5キロ。

これはどうでしょうか：
I am as close to my mother as she was to her mother.
（ヒント：この「close」は物理的な距離ではなく、気持ちの問題です。）
