This is not a piece of advice to you I'm talking to myself for my practice of writing skills. So there are customs that are hard to get around people will take a poor view of someone who doesn't eat the main dish or only eats gluten-free foods. I suppose the phrase "get round" might be "get around" this phrase means avoid.
