dip,　coat の意味は？

The boy... has rolled his dip in a thick coat of brown paper, that flares away with the candle.
は、少し想像が必要な表現の文ですが、おそらくこの少年は brown paper を丸めてそれを蝋（ろう）か何かに dip して thick coat（べったりとした厚みのあるコーティング）にして candle として燃やしていて、その灯火が candle として flare away していると言っているのだと思います。
