"Nothing short of ~ "と" none other than"は書き換え可能？

「nothing short of」は、何かが極端にすごいと表現したいときに使います。

Use “nothing short of” to emphasize the extreme nature of something.

Her recovery from COVID-19 was nothing short of a miracle. She had a lung cancer.

それに対して「none other than」は、人が誰であったかを知って、または物が何であったかを知って、すごく驚いたと表現したいときに使います。

Use “none other than” to emphasize the surprising identity of a person or thing.

My first customer was none other than Joe Biden.

His Christmas present for his son was none other than a home run ball autographed by Shohei Ohtani.

この「nothing short of」と「none other than」は、互いに書き換え可能かどうかというご質問ですが、書き換えは出来ません。表現したいこと、相手に伝えたいことが異なるからです。

A1) He was none other than the very person who had listened to the speech in the front row.

この文は正しいです。どうして驚いたのかは分かりませんが、おそらく「別の人かと思っていたのに、その人だったので、驚いた」ということでしょう。

スピーチは観る (watch) ものでなくて、聴く (listen to) ものであることに気をつけてください。

A2) He was nothing short of the very person who had listened to the speech in the front row.

この文は、意味不明です。何がすごいのか、極端なのか、分かりません。

B1) His conduct is nothing short of madness.

上の文は正しいです。「madness」は極端な状態です。

B2) His conduct is none other than madness is.

これは変です。「none other than」の後には、驚くべき、具体的な人や物が続きます。

B3) His conduct might just as well be madness.

これは間違っています。「might (just) as well」は、他のことをやっても結果は同じになっていたと、表現したいときに使います。

Use “might (just) as well” to say that something else could have been done with the same result.

The party was so dull that I might (just) as well have stayed home.

以上のような表現は、日本語に訳してから理解しようとすると、間違える可能性があります。日本語にぴったり合う表現があるとは限らないからです。

出来るだけ英語は英語で考えることをお勧めします。または、上記のような説明を日本語で理解した上で、使うと良いでしょう。
