A later, comprehensive study、の later は、study という名詞にかかっている形容詞です。この場合、study にかかる形容詞が2つあって、カンマで併記されています。
これを a later comprehensive study としてしまうと、later が comprehensive にかかっているような誤解を生むので、句読点を打って later が comprehensive にかかっていないことをはっきりさせています。
２つ目の文章中のfor whichのforは、
Roberts was one of the co-authors for the later, comprehensive study by Preckel. だと言うところの for です。
