a the の必要性について
a, the がある文とない文があるのですが、付けないのはどういう時でしょうか？
・The company's claims were highly dubious, so it was investigated for false advertising.
→false advertising の前にtheはつかないのでしょうか？
それとも文法的に付けられないのでしょうか？
・Within a few years, the area with a high incidence of crime became much safer.
→crime の前にa またはthe はつかないのでしょうか？
a high incidence of crimeで一つの名詞となるので不要ということなのでしょうか？

"The company's claims were highly dubious, so it was investigated for false advertising." の "false advertising" に the をつけないのは、false advertising という一般的なことについて言っているからです。ここで the をつけると、前述の false advertising とか この世に唯一の false advertising などという意味になります。
"Within a few years, the area with a high incidence of crime became much safer." の crime に a をつけないのは、犯罪行為という可算名詞ではなく、（集合的な意味で）犯罪ということを言っているからです。ここで the をつけると、前述の crime もしくは この世に唯一の crime という意味になります。
