似ているようで、少し違います。realize は真実であると気がつくこと、recognize は一瞬でも見たり考えたりした上で認めることです。
それぞれ、REAL-ize、cognize again と覚えるといいかもしれません。以下の文を比較してみてください。

もちろん、realize でも recognize でもいい場合もあります。でもやっぱり少し意味が違います。
