"I'll go down and get him," said Marcel. を Marcel said で言うのであれば、
Marcel said "I'll go down and get him." と言うでしょう。
Marcel said と言うと、そこで何を言ったのかということを期待させますので、
"I'll go down and get him." Marcel said. というと、え、何をいったの？と遡ってそれを思い出さなければいけないので、受け手としては中途半端な文に聞こえます。
"I'll go down and get him," said Marcel. と、said を倒置して言ったことのすぐ後ろに持ってきているのはその言ったこととの関連を途切れさせないためです。
