whatの用法

whatを疑問代名詞とも見れます。

whatを疑問代名詞と見れば、
what　主語
is　述語動詞
popular　補語
SVCの文型

疑問代名詞 what が名詞節を作り because of のあとに続けられています。
名詞節も前置詞の目的語になれます。

because of what is popular 「何が人気なのかとの理由で」
つまり、「その新しいレストランは何が人気なのか、何が評判なのか気になって行った。」
こんな感じです。

関係代名詞のwhatでしょう。
